Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi of Nottingham Forest has emerged from a medically induced coma following emergency surgery, according to Mail Sport.
The 27-year-old is now recovering after undergoing a life-threatening abdominal operation earlier this week. The striker was placed in intensive care on Wednesday night after surgeons began what was described as a complex and delicate procedure. Following the surgery, Awoniyi was kept under close observation in hospital.
After several anxious hours, he finally regained consciousness—a moment of immense relief for his family, who remained by his side throughout the ordeal.
The incident occurred during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City last weekend. Awoniyi had collided violently with the goalpost but, after receiving brief treatment on the pitch, bravely chose to continue playing. He was later substituted—but only after coach Nuno Espírito Santo had used his final substitution to replace Elliot Anderson with Jota Silva.
Awoniyi’s condition is now stable, and he is expected to remain under medical supervision as he begins the long road to recovery.
