Nigeria: Ilenikhena, Okonkwo and James called up for the first time

Éric Chelle has called up Arthur Okonkwo, Isaac James, and George Ilenikhena for the first time to the senior Nigeria national team. The three newcomers are included in the 24-player squad for the opening matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, against Madagascar on September 25 and Guinea-Bissau on September 29.

The new additions span all three lines. Okonkwo joins the goalkeepers alongside Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye. James provides an additional option in defense, while Ilenikhena enters an attacking sector that includes Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and Moses Simon.

The squad also marks the return of Stanley Nwabali and Ola Aina. In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Raphael Onyedika, and Frank Onyeka form the core selected by Chelle to kick off the continental campaign.

The head coach retains several key players while integrating newcomers who are experiencing the senior group for the first time. The first match will be against Madagascar, followed by a second encounter four days later against Guinea-Bissau.

A separate, younger squad is also expected for the friendly match against Russia on October 6. This match will allow the Nigerian staff to explore additional options after the two qualifying matchdays.

Nigeria will open its campaign against Madagascar on September 25 before facing Guinea-Bissau on September 29. Okonkwo, James, and Ilenikhena will have their first opportunity to wear the Super Eagles jersey in the senior team during this gathering.
