Nick Reiner: Los Angeles prosecutors rule out death penalty in parents’ case

Los Angeles prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who is accused of murdering his parents, director Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner. The decision was announced on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, ahead of a preliminary hearing.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman explained that his office conducted a “thorough” review of the case. He consulted with the couple’s other children, as well as the prosecutors and investigators involved in the case.

This decision does not end the prosecution. If Nick Reiner is found guilty, the maximum penalty now considered is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

At 33 years old, he has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The grand jury also included special circumstances related to multiple homicides and premeditated intent, as well as an allegation of knife use.

Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty. He is therefore presumed innocent until a final judgment is rendered.

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead on December 14, 2025, in their Brentwood home in Los Angeles. They suffered fatal injuries inflicted by a sharp weapon. Their son was arrested a few hours later and remains in custody without bail.

Bénin Web TV had previously reported his detention. Since then, an indictment issued in July and revealed in August has replaced the initial charges and added the premeditated intent circumstance.

The removal of the death penalty only pertains to the punishment that prosecutors could seek in the event of a conviction. The murder charges, contested by Nick Reiner, remain unchanged.
