The Les Démocrates MP, also vice-president of the National Assembly, gathered his supporters at the Athiémé stadium on Saturday, November 29 to announce his support for the candidacy of Romuald Wadagni. He took the opportunity to launch a new movement called « Les Ambassadeurs de Romuald Wadagni ».

The rally brought together residents, administrative officials and the movement’s initial members. The coordinator, Gilbert Bossou, explained that this initiative is part of a reflection on public governance, with the aim of creating a space for dialogue among citizens.

A minute of silence was observed in tribute to a recently deceased activist.

Facing the audience, Léon Basile Ahossi justified his political choice as a personal decision. He said he acted in accordance with his conscience, while acknowledging that his decision provoked criticism and incomprehension within his former camp. He described a political climate he considers “marked by exclusion”, calling for a “break that brings people together”.

The lawmaker also sought to clarify the nature of his endorsement. Anticipating questions about his support for a member of the government, he emphasized the distinction between the candidate he supports and the current head of state: “Wadagni is not Talon. Wadagni has never been President of the Republic.”

According to him, this candidacy offers an alternative more attentive to citizens’ concerns. He says he pressed Romuald Wadagni on a principle he considers essential: “To lead is to listen”.

The meeting was also marked by the presence of deputies who recently left the Les Démocrates party, reinforcing the symbolic significance of this repositioning. In Athiémé, Léon Basile Ahossi thus took an action that confirms his political shift, betting on a Wadagni–Talata ticket that he presents as a choice of proximity and openness.

It is therefore possible that the political movement “Les Ambassadeurs de Romuald Wadagni” will, over time, merge into one of the two major parties of the camp, definitively marking the former customs agent’s break with the political opposition in Benin.
