A page is turned for one of the great names in world football. Ángel Di María, World Cup champion with Argentina in 2022, announced this Wednesday that he is ending his European career. The 37-year-old winger confirmed the news in a message posted on his Instagram account.

Today, it’s time to go home. My career in Europe is over. After 18 years on this continent, it’s time for me to come back“, wrote the player.

This announcement comes a few days after the elimination of Benfica, his current club, in the round of 16 of the Club World Cup against Chelsea. Di María, who still tops the competition’s scorers’ list, leaves Europe with an impressive record and a career marked by consistency at the highest level.

The Argentinian international wanted to thank the clubs that have marked his journey: “Thank you to Benfica, Real Madrid, Manchester United, PSG, and Juventus. Thanks for the memories, the lessons, and the friendship. I leave fulfilled and proud. Goodbye Europe! What a journey!

Revealed at Benfica Lisbon, Di María had made a name for himself at Real Madrid before moving to Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, then Juventus, finally returning to Benfica in the summer of 2023. His return to his home country now seems imminent, probably to an Argentine club, while the next Copa América could mark his last major international event.
