FIFA Day March 2026: Iran ready to unleash its ‘ballistic missiles’ against Nigeria
As Iran takes on Nigeria this Friday in a friendly, Hossein Abarghouei is confident and says that Team Melli is ready to rival the Super Eagles, despite a shortened preparation.

As the friendly clash with Nigeria approaches, Hossein Abarghouei lays out his ambitions. The Iranian defender is confident in his team’s ability to compete with the Nigerian squad, Friday, in a match that is part of the preparation for the upcoming international fixtures. In an interview granted to Tasnim News Agency, the player highlighted the seriousness of the work done in recent days, as well as the good momentum of the group: « We are satisfied with the progress of our training sessions and we have set up an excellent training camp. »
Aware of expectations, Abarghouei stresses the importance of these friendly matches in building the team: « I hope that we can bring joy to our supporters by obtaining favorable results against Nigeria and Costa Rica. These are important steps in our World Cup preparation. » Despite a shortened preparation time, the central defender is reassuring: « During our short stay in Turkey, we trained effectively. All the players are professionals and have maintained their individual levels. Our physical condition is satisfactory and we are ready. »
The Nigerian national football team, meanwhile, is ramping up. Arrived in Turkey on Tuesday with a reduced squad, the Nigerians quickly expanded their ranks, notably with the arrival of Wilfred Ndidi, bringing the squad to 22 players. The only downside for the Nigerian staff: Calvin Bassey’s withdrawal, forced to pull out due to a back injury. This showdown between Iran and Nigeria thus promises to be a real test for two sides seeking to find their bearings. Their last meeting dates back to the group stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, ending in a goalless draw (0-0).
