Extraordinary Council of Ministers: government support for Bertin BADA, grieving after the coup on Sunday
Benin remains marked by the attempted destabilization that occurred on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

The mutineers, who targeted several residences of senior army officers, caused an additional tragedy. The wife of General Bertin Bada, the military chief of staff to the President of the Republic, was seriously wounded by gunfire during the attack on their home. She succumbed to her injuries a few hours later.
The situation led the government to convene an extraordinary Council of Ministers on Monday, December 8, at the Presidency, the Palais de la Marina. General Bada was present despite the personal ordeal he is going through.
Civilian and military authorities responsible for security and defense also took part in this exceptional session. The aim was to take stock of Sunday’s events and examine the necessary adjustments to strengthen the protection of republican institutions.
President Patrice Talon opened the meeting by observing a minute of silence in tribute to Berthe Bada. A gesture that signals the executive’s solidarity with General Bada, who is stricken by the loss of his wife in the context of an attack on national stability.
Investigations are ongoing, while the government reaffirms its determination to guarantee security across the entire territory.
This attempted coup, quickly contained by loyalist forces, nevertheless underscores the need to reinforce vigilance measures around the state’s critical institutions.
