Billy Joel: After surgery, the singer shares reassuring health updates

Billy Joel revealed that he underwent a procedure involving the placement of a shunt following his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus. At 77 years old, the “Piano Man” performer claims that the surgery has improved his memory, balance, and daily functioning.

The singer provided an update on Wednesday, September 9, on The Billy Joel Channel, his SiriusXM channel. He explained that he consulted a neurologist after experiencing balance issues and a persistent sensation of swaying.

According to his account, the shunt placement was intended to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid associated with normal pressure hydrocephalus. Billy Joel stated that he initially hesitated but agreed to the procedure after learning it could enhance his balance and memory.

The musician assures that he is feeling better and is undergoing physical therapy. He reassured his fans by stating that he is “still here,” while indicating that he is following his doctors’ recommendations.

His diagnosis was made public in May 2025, following the cancellation of his scheduled concerts. His team had then indicated that the condition affected his hearing, vision, and balance.

Billy Joel also explained that his doctors advised him to currently limit rock concerts at very high volumes, which they consider too taxing for his recovery. The singer expressed his desire to continue his treatment before considering a more sustained return to the stage.

In January 2026, however, he made a surprise appearance on stage in Florida for a short set of two songs, marking his first performance since the announcement of his diagnosis. No full tour has been announced at this time.
