CAN 2027 Qualifiers: Sessi d’Almeida to captain Benin for the first time against Burkina Faso
Without Steve Mounié, the Squirrels will hand the captaincy to Sessi d’Almeida against the Stallions on Friday in Ouagadougou for their qualification opener.
Sessi d’Almeida will wear the captain’s armband for Benin for the first time in his international career on Friday, September 25, against Burkina Faso at the 4-Août Stadium in Ouagadougou. The midfielder confirmed this during a press conference on Thursday ahead of the opening day of the CAN 2027 qualifiers.
“I am happy to be captain for the first time, and I will give my all as the first warrior on the field,” said the 30-year-old player. He also assured that the Squirrels are approaching this match with confidence despite several absences.
D’Almeida takes over this role from Steve Mounié, the usual captain of the team, who is unavailable due to injury. His experience in midfield makes him one of Gernot Rohr’s key players for this encounter against the Stallions.
Benin is in Group F alongside Burkina Faso, Mauritania, and the Central African Republic. Before traveling to Ouagadougou, Junior Olaïtan had shifted the pressure onto Burkina Faso, who will play this opening match at home.
