Benin: the Episcopal Conference announces the death of Bishop Barthélémy Adoukonou

The Episcopal Conference of Benin (CEB) announced on Monday, 27 October 2025, the passing of Monsignor Barthélémy Adoukonou, former Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture at the Vatican.

The prelate passed away during the night from Sunday, 26 to Monday, 27 October 2025, at CNHU-Hubert Koutoukou Maga in Cotonou, according to an official statement signed by Monsignor Roger Houngbédji, Archbishop of Cotonou and president of the CEB.

An eminent theologian, educator and man of faith, Monsignor Adoukonou devoted his entire life to the service of the Church, of God and of culture.

A close collaborator of Cardinal Paul Poupard and later of Pope Benedict XVI, he was distinguished by his intellectual contribution to the dialogue between faith, reason and African cultures.

In its message, the Episcopal Conference of Benin pays tribute to the memory of a “great servant of God” whose wisdom and writings deeply marked several generations of priests, religious and intellectuals.

Arrangements for his funeral will be announced later.
