Benin: substitute deputy Jean Eudes Gandonou resigns from Les Démocrates
The alternate MP for Cotonou’s 5th district, Jean Eudes Gandonou, has announced his resignation from the opposition party Les Démocrates.

The party Les Démocrates is recording another resignation. Jean Eudes Gandonou, alternate MP and coordinator for Cotonou’s 5th district, has officially jumped ship. His decision, communicated in a letter addressed to the party president, comes amid a context where several senior figures of the opposition party are expressing internal disagreements.
In his letter dated 17 November 2025, Mr. Gandonou thanks his comrades for the moments and experiences shared, while specifying that his departure is due to ‘reasons of personal convenience.’ The letter, received the same day at 9:49 a.m. by the party, bears the receipt signature of representative Jean-Luc A. Dossou, acting on behalf of the Démocrates.
In a letter dated 17 November 2025, he cites reasons of personal convenience to justify his departure. While the author of the letter remains discreet about the true motivations for his resignation, this new defection occurs in a climate marked by strategic readjustments ahead of the upcoming elections.
It wouldn’t be far-fetched to see this as a sign of weakening for the party of former president Boni Yayi. With these resignations across the board, it remains to be seen whether the party Les Démocrates can regain its former prestige.
