Benin: Police Commissioner in Cotonou Dismissed for Excessive Zeal

- Publicité-

In recent days, social media has been rocked by a troubling resurgence of misconduct among officials responsible for enforcing traffic laws. These acts, contrary to the fundamental values and principles, have sullied the public image of the police institution and have provoked strong reactions within the higher ranks.

Before the start of enforcement, official communications were circulated to remind police officers of the need for professionalism and restraint in carrying out their duties. The goal was to put an end to abuses of authority, extortion practices, and particularly the violence that has recently made headlines.

In response to these practices, the authorities have taken firm measures. Moreover, several police officers involved or mentioned have been arrested, demonstrating the institution’s determination to combat these deviations.

The dismissal on Monday, April 15, of a district commissioner in the city of Cotonou over an incident of excessive zeal on the part of one of his agents, flagged by a mini-bus driver, illustrates the authorities’ resolve to clean up the ranks and restore public trust in the police.

These incidents highlight the imperative for the police to provide an impeccable public service that respects everyone’s rights and adheres to the tenets of democracy. Each officer must fully realize the extent of their responsibility and act with honesty, respect, and professional competence.

Furthermore, combatting unacceptable behavior within the police force is a crucial and ongoing challenge for the organization. It is also an opportunity to strengthen its legitimacy and credibility in the eyes of the citizens.
