The Beninese government held an extraordinary Council of Ministers on Monday, December 8, 2025, called in emergency the day after the failed coup attempt.
The work of the extraordinary council focused primarily on assessing the security situation and the urgent measures to be taken to prevent any new attempt at destabilization. Firm instructions were reportedly given to the defense and security forces to reinforce security at sensitive sites across the country.
Less than twenty-four hours after the coup attempt that shook the country, General Bertin Bada, Director of the President’s Military Cabinet, who lost his wife in the attack, was also present at the extraordinary Council of Ministers.
To mark the seriousness of the moment and to pay tribute to the victim, President Patrice Talon opened the session with a minute of silence.
On Sunday, December 7, mutineers launched a coordinated attack aimed at overthrowing the institutions. Their assault on General Bada’s home resulted in the death of his wife, Berthe Bada, an act that deeply shocked public opinion. The perpetrators, most of whom have been arrested, are facing justice.
