Authorities consider that the previous name, judged too long and impractical, no longer reflected the efficiency and clarity required for an infrastructure of this importance.

Reference to the title of the honored individual or to the neighborhood where it is located was not deemed necessary. The government therefore decided: the facility will henceforth bear the name « Aéroport Bernardin GANTIN de Cotonou » instead of “Aéroport international Cardinal Bernardin GANTIN de Cotonou”.

The Minister of Living Environment and Transport, responsible for Sustainable Development, is mandated to undertake all administrative and technical steps to formalize this new designation.

This decision is part of an effort to make public names more coherent and operational, within the context of the ongoing modernization of airport services in Benin.
