Benin: another Les Démocrates official jailed in the forged documents case
A new judicial blow hits the main opposition party, Les Démocrates (LD).

A departmental party official was placed in pretrial detention on Monday, November 10, 2025, as part of an investigation into an alleged network forging proxy authorizations.
The events stem from a complaint filed on November 6 by the Direction générale des Impôts (DGI). Massive requests for duplicates of tax clearance certificates and criminal records, coming from people linked to the LD party, triggered an inspection. Checks revealed irregular signatures and unauthorized proxies.
The accused is being prosecuted for “forgery, use of forged documents and electoral fraud,” offenses punishable by one to five years’ imprisonment under the Beninese Penal Code.
The special prosecutor’s office of the Cour de Répression des Infractions Économiques et du Terrorisme (CRIET) and the judicial police are continuing investigations to identify other members of the network.
This is the second person placed in custody since the outbreak of this case, which led to the questioning of two party officials. After being presented to the prosecutor, one was summoned and the other remanded. It is the LD party official who had been summoned who has now lost his freedom in turn.
