Benin: a “rainbow egg” seller arrested in Allada
An individual was arrested on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 in the village of Adjago, Ahouannonzou district in Allada.

The local police station arrested him as he tried to sell his victim an alleged “rainbow egg”, acting on behalf of an organized gang of scammers.
The victim, a palm wine producer known for his hospitality in Lon-Agonmey, had been carefully targeted by the network. The scammers first tried to build trust by flattering his generosity before introducing their fraudulent scheme.
One of them posed as his “nephew”, claiming to have inherited a mysterious rainbow egg coveted by a buyer supposedly willing to pay fifteen million CFA francs.
The man wasn’t fooled. Not convinced by the story and refusing to believe in any sort of golden egg, he cut the exchange short and alerted the police.
Alerted, police officers organized an intervention at the time set for the transaction. The scheme backfired on its perpetrator, who was arrested in the act.
During initial questioning, the suspect admitted to the facts. He said he had recently joined a gang of scammers operating in his village of Adjago. Thanks to the victim’s vigilance, no financial loss was reported.
The methods used are reminiscent of other well-known scams in southern Benin. The scammers’ imagination has already staged “white giant rats” and “two-necked bottles.” The “rainbow egg” now joins this gallery of fictional objects used to trap the most gullible targets.
The Republican Police say they will maintain constant vigilance to protect the population against these practices and ensure the safety of people and property.
