Togo suspends France 24 and RFI broadcasts for three months
Togo’s High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC) announced, following its session on June 16, the suspension for a period of three months of the broadcast of France 24 and Radio France Internationale (RFI) across the entire national territory.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Pitalounani Telou, the institution cites repeated failings on the part of the two French media outlets. It denounces a lack of journalistic rigour, inaccuracies in the handling of information, as well as content deemed biased, liable to harm the stability of Togolese institutions.
« The plurality of opinions does not justify the broadcasting of falsehoods, » the HAAC states, framing its decision within a logic of « responsible regulation » intended to preserve public order and the country’s image.
While reaffirming its commitment to a free and ethical press, the regulatory authority stresses that freedom of expression must not be confused with interference or disinformation.
