A new page in the history of African music is being written. A major figure in Afrobeat, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has officially been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a prestigious distinction that confirms his global influence. The Nigerian musician is honored in the “Early Influences” category, a recognition that highlights his pivotal role in shaping the evolution of contemporary sounds. He thus joins a small circle of artists who have left a lasting mark on the international music industry.

Aside from Fela, other iconic figures have been distinguished, among them Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons or Celia Cruz. In another category, Sade Adu will also be honored for her artistic contribution. The laureates were revealed during a special program broadcast in the United States, after a vote bringing together more than a thousand players from the musical world, including artists, historians and industry professionals.

The induction ceremony will be held on November 14 at the Peacock Theatre, in Los Angeles, where Fela’s legacy will be celebrated before an international audience. This distinction crowns an already historic year for the Nigerian artist, who was recently awarded a Grammy for his body of work. A double crowning that confirms, once again, the indelible imprint left by Fela on the global music scene.
