Niger: over 16,600 cases of tuberculosis detected by 2024

In 2024, Niger detected 16,603 cases of susceptible tuberculosis, including 13,464 new cases of bacteriologically positive pulmonary tuberculosis, the Nigerien government announced on Monday.

On World TB Day, celebrated on March 24, the Minister of National Education, Dr. Elisabeth Sherif, acting Minister of Health, highlighted the progress made in the fight against the disease.

“The incidence of tuberculosis has decreased from 83 to 74 cases per 100,000 inhabitants between 2020 and 2023. Similarly, mortality linked to this infection has fallen from 15 to 8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the same period”, she said, quoted by the Niger state newspaper Le Sahel.

In terms of treatment, the therapeutic success rate has risen from 82% in 2019 to 88% in 2023 in Niger, the minister added.
