Morocco: authorities warn against a new collective crossing to Ceuta
The Moroccan Ministry of Interior has warned that individuals participating in a gathering intended to illegally cross the borders of Ceuta or Melilla could be prevented, arrested, and prosecuted. On social media, calls are circulating for a new attempt on August 15, a few weeks after an operation that reportedly attracted over 70,000 people to Ceuta.

Messages shared on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook are inviting Moroccans to gather in groups near the two Spanish enclaves located in the north of the kingdom. The date of August 15 is being presented as a potential day for a collective crossing, either by land or sea.
On July 30 and 31, more than 70,000 people reportedly responded to similar calls, and several managed to enter Ceuta illegally, according to the Spanish Civil Guard. The migrants attempted to cross the border on foot or by swimming.
This previous mobilization resulted in a heavy human toll. At least 141 people drowned, according to a Spanish NGO. The tragedy ignited significant criticism of the Moroccan authorities, who were accused of delaying a public statement.
Arrests announced against suspected authors of messages
In light of new calls, the Moroccan Ministry of Interior announced that any gathering aimed at organizing a collective crossing would be prevented. Its spokesperson also warned that participants could be arrested and face legal proceedings.
The ministry further indicated that a series of arrests had been initiated against individuals suspected of being behind the publications encouraging travel to Ceuta. Authorities did not specify the number of people detained or the offenses they are accused of.
