Morocco: $150 million for a dam aimed at reducing flooding and securing water

The OPEC Fund for International Development approved a $150 million financing package on September 16 to assist in the construction of a new dam in Morocco. The project aims to enhance water security and climate resilience, mitigate flood risks, and support sustainable agriculture.

This Moroccan funding represents the largest individual operation among the projects outlined in a new $645 million package approved by the institution for 14 partner countries. Of this total, $435 million is allocated for public sector operations and $210 million for the private sector.

The OPEC Fund describes the dam as an investment in water infrastructure in response to climate pressures. The institution finances development projects in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in water, energy, transport, and agriculture.

Simultaneously, Morocco is pursuing a program to increase its water storage capacity and diversify its resources through dams, basin interconnections, and desalination projects. The new support aligns with this strategy to secure supply and protect agricultural activities.

The OPEC Fund’s announcement does not yet specify the name or location of the dam, its storage capacity, total cost, or the timeline for construction.
