Ghanaian football has been struck by tragedy. Berekum Chelsea announced the death of its forward Dominic Frimpong, victim of an armed attack on Sunday evening. The incident occurred after a Ghana Premier League match against FC Samartex, played at DUN’s Park and lost by the visitors (1-0). On the way back to Berekum, the team’s bus was targeted on the Bibiani–Goaso road, near Ahyiresu.
According to the initial information released by the club, armed individuals blocked the road, forcing the players and staff to abandon their vehicle in the panic and seek refuge in the bush. Several members of the delegation were injured during the attack. Shot in the head, 20-year-old Dominic Frimpong was rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital. Despite the emergency services’ intervention, he died from his injuries shortly after admission.
Law enforcement, mobilized, have launched a large-scale operation to locate the attackers, who remain at large. Meanwhile, searches are under way to locate certain team members who were scattered at the time of the attack. Arrived on loan in January from Aduana FC, the young forward had quickly integrated into the squad. He had played 13 matches this season, scoring two goals. A brutal death that plunges an entire club, and beyond, Ghanaian football, into deep sorrow.
