Diplomacy: update on the meeting between Romuald Wadagni and Ibrahim Traoré
On a friendship and work visit to Ouagadougou on June 2, 2026, the President of the Republic of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, held a working session at the presidential palace of Koulouba with his Burkinabé counterpart, Ibrahim Traoré.

This high-level meeting is part of a dynamic to revive and revitalize bilateral relations between the two countries.
According to the joint communiqué made public at the end of the face-to-face meeting, read by the Burkinabé Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, the visit of the Beninese head of state marks a decisive step in strengthening the partnership between Ouagadougou and Cotonou.
The two leaders conducted an in-depth review of bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed their joint commitment to building a relationship based on trust, solidarity, and consultation in the face of shared challenges.
The discussions were largely dominated by sub-regional security issues. The two heads of state emphasized the urgency of strengthening cooperation in the fight against terrorism, transnational crime, and violent extremism.
They reiterated their determination to act in a coordinated manner to preserve peace, stability, and promote sustainable development in West Africa.
On the economic front, discussions highlighted promising prospects in several key sectors, including trade, industry, vocational training, infrastructure, and logistics.
The strategic role of the port of Cotonou in supplying Burkina Faso was particularly underscored, as was the need to improve the smoothness of transport corridors. To this end, both parties agreed to accelerate the holding of the fifth session of the Great Joint Commission for Cooperation and to finalize pending agreements.
The two presidents also praised the harmonious integration of their respective communities and reminded of the importance of the historical and human ties that unite the Beninese and Burkinabé peoples.
The visit concluded with an official invitation extended by the Beninese president to his Burkinabé counterpart, reflecting the shared desire to place the relations between the two states in a new dynamic focused on common prosperity and regional integration.
