Amid speculation about a potential political comeback by the former head of state, Talon sought to dispel any notion of personal rivalry.

Since Talon came to power in 2016, relations between the two men have been strained, particularly during the electoral crises of 2019 and 2021. Once an ally of Boni Yayi, Talon later became his political opponent, with the former president repeatedly taking public stances against him.

With upcoming elections on the horizon, some observers believe Boni Yayi could back a candidate opposed to Talon’s eventual choice.

Asked about this possibility, President Talon downplayed the idea of an inevitable political clash and even suggested that reconciliation might not be out of the question.

“I have no personal issue with former president Boni Yayi, and I don’t think he has one with me to the point of seeking revenge. Maybe we’ll even find ourselves supporting the same candidate—who knows?” he said.

This statement, a stark contrast to past tensions, can be seen as either a gesture of appeasement or simple political pragmatism ahead of the 2026 presidential election.

It remains to be seen whether Boni Yayi will adopt a similar stance or take a more confrontational position against the current occupant of the Marina Palace.
