Benin: MP Michel Sodjinou leaves the parliamentary group “Les Démocrates”
A shock at the opening of the second ordinary session of the National Assembly in Porto-Novo. MP Michel Sodjinou, elected in the 19th electoral constituency, has officially left the parliamentary group Les Démocrates, the main opposition party.

This split, which had been brewing for several weeks, comes at an already tense time for Boni Yayi’s party.
Michel Sodjinou, whose withdrawal of sponsorship helped contribute to the party’s disqualification from the presidential election on April 12, 2026, is thus making a deliberate political shift. He is followed by 5 other MPs.
The resigners immediately registered themselves as independents. They are François Sodjinou, Chantal Adjovi, Joël Godonou, Leansou do Regi, Denise Hounmenou and Constant Nahum. This group departure comes just days after the disqualification of the main opposition party’s presidential duo for the April 12, 2026 ballot.
A quiet but consequential realignment that could shake up the parliamentary opposition just months before the end of the term.
