Benin: Deputy Soumaïla Sounon Boké remanded in custody at CRIET
The deputy Soumaïla Sounon Boké, elected from the Les Démocrates party, has been remanded in custody on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, following his appearance before the special prosecutor of the Court for Repression of Economic and Terrorist Offences (CRIET).
According to his lawyer, Me Aboubacar Baparapé, contacted by BIP Radio, the parliamentarian is charged with incitement to rebellion and harassment by electronic means. The elected official contests all of the charges against him. His counsel calls for a review of the file “with a bit of leniency,” arguing that the elements attributed to his client cannot justify such a measure.
The charges follow a message published on December 7, 2025 in a WhatsApp group, at the moment when individuals described as mutineers were appearing on national television. The deputy allegedly wrote: “it’s party time.” A post that the interested party says was taken out of context.
Following the procedure, Soumaïla Sounon Boké was incarcerated in the Missérété civil prison. His trial is scheduled for Tuesday, December 30, 2025, as part of a flagrante delicto procedure, according to his lawyer.
