Drawn into Group C, the Cranes will face Nigeria (three-time African champions), Tunisia — winners of the 2004 edition — and their neighbours Tanzania. A tough draw, but one the Belgian coach is taking in stride.

“The Super Eagles are a formidable team, made up of talented, experienced players who play in the major European leagues,” he told CAFonline. “We will respect them, but we will not be intimidated. We will be ready to fight,” he added.

Drawing on his experience on the continent, Paul Put, a finalist at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations with Burkina Faso, believes in his squad’s ability to cause an upset. Uganda will play their first match against the Carthage Eagles on December 23 in Morocco, host of this 35th edition of the tournament.
