Benin: The Democrats call on the Senate to revise controversial laws at a meeting in Parakou

On the occasion of a meeting held in Parakou on Sunday, August 16, 2026, the leaders and supporters of the opposition party The Democrats gathered to assess the national political situation and discuss the future of their political formation, following a period marked by internal tensions and resignations.
During this gathering, the president of The Democrats reaffirmed his party’s stance against the regime of Romuald Wadagni. While acknowledging some social progress, the party leader emphasized that The Democrats would maintain a role of vigilance and continue to denounce any potential excesses.
Urgent need to review certain controversial laws
Expressing his expectations towards the new upper chamber of Parliament, he referred to the Senate as the “Council of Sages” and deemed it the responsibility of this institution, composed of experienced figures, to reexamine certain legislative texts that are contentious.
This position comes as the Senate finalizes its institutional establishment. For reference, Patrice Talon was elected president of the upper chamber on August 6, with 24 votes out of 25, alongside Louis Vlavonou as vice-president, and Alassane Séidou and Adidjatou Mathys serving as rapporteur and alternate rapporteur, respectively. The 25 senators are scheduled to meet in a preparatory session on September 15 to examine the administrative and financial regulations of the new institution.
