“You can’t win the Champions League with a defense like that,” Emmanuel Petit slams Barça

For Emmanuel Petit, FC Barcelona has neither the defensive solidity nor the collective resources needed to aim for the Champions League this season, especially since the club relies too much on its prodigy Lamine Yamal.

Former France international Emmanuel Petit delivered a blunt assessment of FC Barcelona’s European ambitions, which he considers far too limited to target the Champions League this season. In his view, the Blaugranas rely excessively on their young prodigy Lamine Yamal and show too many defensive weaknesses to hope to conquer the continental stage.

“Barça can contend for the La Liga title, but certainly not for the Champions League — that’s impossible. Who can believe a team with such a defence can go all the way?”, said Petit, quoted by TouchlineX. The former France midfielder notably recalled the heavy defeat to Inter in last season’s semi-final: “Conceding seven goals at that stage of the competition is a deal-breaker. Some will say they scored six, but for me that’s not enough.”

Petit also believes the dependence on Lamine Yamal’s talent is too great: “Today, Barcelona looks like a casino: every bet rests on Yamal. The club has good players, but no longer true superstars like Messi in his day.” And he concluded: “Lamine Yamal will not be able to win the Champions League on his own. Even Messi wouldn’t have done it without Xavi, Iniesta or Puyol.”
