The cruise ship Oceania Regatta stops in Cotonou and opens a new chapter in cruise tourism in Benin.
The Autonomous Port of Cotonou welcomed, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the inaugural stop of the cruise ship Oceania Regatta. With 575 passengers on board and 389 crew members, this arrival marks a significant step in the gradual integration of Benin into the major routes of international maritime tourism.

Belonging to Oceania Cruises, the ship, which is more than 180 meters long, made an unprecedented stop in Benin’s economic capital. This first visit reflects the growing interest of shipowners in the Benin destination, seen as an emerging market with strong cultural and tourist potential.
During their stay, reports Africaho, 373 cruise passengers participated in organized excursions to several iconic sites in the country. Ouidah, Porto-Novo, and Ganvié were notably on the agenda, offering visitors a glimpse of Benin’s historical, cultural, and lagoon heritage.
For the Autonomous Port of Cotonou and the stakeholders in the tourism sector, this stop represents much more than just a technical halt. It serves as a strategic showcase for promoting the Benin destination to an international clientele seeking authentic experiences and new stops outside traditional circuits.
The arrival of the Oceania Regatta is thus part of a repositioning dynamic for the port of Cotonou on the global cruise tourism map. This dynamic offers economic benefits, but also involves challenges in terms of hospitality, infrastructure, and sustainable enhancement of national heritage.
