On loan this season from Bayern Munich, Edna Imade will no longer wear the colors of Nigeria or Morocco. The 25-year-old forward made her official debut for Spain on Friday, in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Nations League final.

Born in Morocco to a Nigerian mother, Imade was eligible to represent the Super Falcons. The Nigerian Football Federation had stepped up efforts to persuade her to join the national team. Long open to that possibility, she ultimately switched to La Roja, which had contacted her in recent months.

Spain’s head coach Sonia Bermúdez called her up for the first time for this two-legged tie against Germany. Coming on in the 85th minute as a substitute for Esther Gonzalez, Imade sealed her international future: her appearance in an official competition now ties her permanently to Spain, in accordance with UEFA regulations.

A decision with significant consequences for both Nigeria and Morocco, who had still been hoping to see her defend their colors. From now on, it is with La Roja that Edna Imade intends to pursue her international career.
