Senegal: Macky Sall faces request for indictment for high treason

- Publicité-

On Tuesday, Guy Marius Sagna, a member of the ruling Pastef party, officially requested the indictment of former Senegalese president Macky Sall before the High Court of Justice for high treason.

The move follows a report by the Court of Auditors, which revealed that more than 2,517 billion CFA francs were contracted outside legal frameworks during Macky Sall’s tenure. The lawmaker accuses the former president of fostering opaque governance practices, marked by accounting manipulations. The request quickly drew a reaction from the opposition.

The Takku Wallu Senegal group denounced what it called a political “fabrication” and vowed to defend the former president’s honor. The matter is now in the hands of the National Assembly.

To initiate proceedings, the motion requires support from three-fifths of the deputies—99 out of 165 votes. However, with a majority of 130 seats, the Pastef party is expected to easily secure the vote once the motion is added to the agenda.
