Nigeria: Unlimited strike disrupts classes at three universities in Lagos

Classes have been disrupted at the three public universities in Lagos State since Tuesday, September 15, following the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declaring a total and indefinite strike. The union demands the local implementation of a federal agreement signed in December 2025.

The strike affects Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH). The three branches decided to cease work after a 14-day ultimatum issued to the state government expired on August 31.

ASUU claims to have sent a final warning on September 10 before the deadline of September 13. In their joint statement, union officials stated that they had received neither a satisfactory resolution nor a concrete plan to implement the required commitments.

The main demand focuses on the full transposition of the agreement reached in December 2025 between the Nigerian federal government and ASUU into the three universities in Lagos. The union specifically cites the consolidated allocation for academic tools as well as social guarantees for both active and retired teachers.

The action has received support from the national leadership of ASUU, according to the union’s statement. The branches of LASU, LASUED, and LASUSTECH clarify that their decision is not directed at the administrations of the institutions and urge students and their families to remain calm during the academic disruption.

The union conditions the end of the strike on a satisfactory commitment from the Lagos government, followed by the signing, transposition, and implementation of the relevant provisions of the 2025 agreement.
