Liverpool manager Arne Slot tried to be reassuring despite the storm. The day after the heavy defeat to PSV Eindhoven (4-1) in the Champions League, the Dutch coach said he was not worried about his future on the Reds’ bench.

This setback continues a particularly worrying run: Liverpool have lost nine of their last twelve matches, in all competitions. Before that trip to the Netherlands, Virgil van Dijk’s teammates had already suffered two heavy 3-0 defeats, against Manchester City and then Nottingham Forest.

Stuck in 12th place in the Premier League and only 13th in the overall Champions League standings, the Anfield club is going through one of its worst periods of the last decade, increasing the pressure on its manager.

Questioned after the match about the possibility of being sacked, Slot remained impassive:
I’m not worried,” he said. “My job is to analyze, to guide the players and to help the team improve. If we make individual mistakes, it’s also because something isn’t working collectively. It’s up to me to fix that.” A clear-headed speech, but it will need to be quickly backed up by results to prevent doubt from settling permanently on the banks of the Mersey.
