Burkina Faso–China: Over 8,000 Visas in 2025, Focus on Technology Transfer

The Burkina Faso–China cooperation must take a more productive direction, with increased equipment, technology transfer, and training. This priority was highlighted on Monday, September 7, in Ouagadougou during a meeting between Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo and Chinese Ambassador Zhao Deyong.

The diplomat also quantified the intensification of human exchanges: more than 8,000 visas were issued in 2025 to Burkinabe citizens for commercial activities, studies, training, and professional assignments in China. This volume accompanies the multiplication of economic, academic, and technical ties between the two countries.

Ouagadougou now wants to use this relationship to strengthen its national production capacities. The Prime Minister has requested that the cooperation prioritise the acquisition of machinery and productive equipment, technology transfer, the training of national skills, and the development of local production units.

The stated objective is to produce more locally, to process a larger share of raw materials domestically, and to gradually reduce dependence on occasional support. This strategy aligns with the growing number of local industrial processing projects in Burkina Faso. Bilateral cooperation already covers agriculture, health, defense, and technological infrastructure.

Moving from Specific Supports to Production Capacities

Burkina Faso already purchases defense equipment as well as agricultural and industrial machinery from China. The authorities want these acquisitions to be more systematically accompanied by expertise, maintenance, training, and the capacity to manufacture or process locally.

The Chinese side indicated that it intends to further tailor its interventions to the priorities defined by the Burkinabe government. Both parties also discussed accelerating the agreements and projects already concluded in order to turn commitments into operational achievements.

The Sino-Burkinabe relationship has strengthened in recent years. The Pala University Hospital Center in Bobo-Dioulasso, inaugurated in December 2025 with the support of China, is among the most visible projects of this cooperation. Furthermore, in 2026, Beijing extended its zero-tariff regime to imports from African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, including Burkina Faso.

The next step will be to translate the direction announced on September 7 into identified industrial and technological projects, with timelines, funding, and production targets. No new detailed portfolio of factories or technology transfers has yet been made public following the meeting.
