Benin: arrest of Candide Azannaï, president of the Restaurer l’Espoir party
Candide Azannaï, president of the Restaurer l’Espoir (RE) party, was arrested late this Friday morning, December 12, 2025. According to initial reports, the former defence minister was apprehended in front of his party’s headquarters, Restaurer l’Espoir, in Cotonou.

The reasons for his arrest remain unknown. However, this detention comes about five days after the attempted coup that was foiled in Benin on Sunday, December 7, 2025. It was his son, Aaron Azannaï, who first reported the arrest on his Facebook page.
An opponent of Patrice Talon’s regime since resigning from the government, Candide Azannaï has stood out for several months as the leader of a movement called the Resistance.
