Argentina: Scaloni sees Lionel Messi reach 1,000 career goals

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni expressed confidence in his captain Lionel Messi’s ability to reach the symbolic 1,000-goal milestone in his career. The coach spoke after the Albiceleste’s wide victory over Zambia (5-0) on Tuesday, in a friendly match played at Estadio Alberto José Armando. Messi joined the celebrations by scoring one of the goals of the match. The Inter Miami forward has recently surpassed the 900-goal mark across all competitions, a milestone that only Cristiano Ronaldo has also reached.

Asked about the possibility of seeing his captain enter the legend even further, Lionel Scaloni was optimistic: “He could reach the 1,000-goal mark. We’ll see how long he will still play. The important thing is that he wants to continue.” The coach stressed his player’s enduring joy: “I hope he makes it, because he is happy on the pitch, and we all want to see him play. In one year, he scored more than 90 goals; he can achieve it again.“
