AFCON 2027 and Women’s AFCON 2026: CAF faces decisive choices
Gathered in Dar es-Salaam, the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football must decide the fate of two major competitions, between a possible postponement and a change of host country.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is about to decide on major issues. Meeting this Friday in Dar es-Salaam, Tanzania, the executive committee must rule on the organization of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations as well as that of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The final tournament of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations raises more questions. Officially awarded to a trio consisting of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, the competition could be moved to 2028. The reason: an increasingly crowded international calendar and persistent uncertainties about the three countries’ ability to meet the logistical and infrastructural requirements of such an event.
Another hot topic on the agenda: the organization of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. According to several concordant sources, Morocco is considering withdrawing. South Africa would be waiting in the wings to take up the mantle. These anticipated decisions could redraw the continental calendar for the years to come.
