AFCON 2025 : two Ugandan internationals threatened with dismissal by their clubs
Melvyn Lorenzen and Timothy Awany were reportedly warned by their clubs that they risked contract termination if they answered the call-up to the Ugandan national team for AFCON 2025, a situation that has sparked outrage as FIFA demands the release of summoned players.

Two Ugandan internationals, Melvyn Lorenzen and Timothy Awany, are reportedly under threat of contract termination from their respective clubs if they decide to accept a call-up to their national team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Lorenzen plays for Muangthong United in Thailand, while Awany represents FC Ashdod in Israel. According to Paul Mukatabala, the Cranes’ press officer, both clubs reportedly made it clear to the players that taking part in AFCON would lead to their dismissal.
These revelations have provoked a strong reaction across African football, as FIFA has reiterated that clubs are obliged to release their internationals one week before the tournament’s kick-off. The final phase of AFCON 2025 will be held in Morocco from 21 December to 18 January 2026.
