Mali-Russia: Goïta and Putin Expand Their Strategic Partnership
On an official visit to Moscow since Sunday, June 22, 2025, the Malian transitional president, Assimi Goïta, was received at the Kremlin on Monday, June 23 by his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

This meeting marks a new stage in the rapprochement between Mali and Russia, initiated in recent years.
Long focused on security and military cooperation, the partnership between the two countries is now expanding to other sectors deemed strategic. During the meeting, Assimi Goïta expressed the desire to strengthen cooperation in the fields of transport, economy, and defense.
Vladimir Putin, surrounded by several members of his government, for his part, hailed the prospects offered by this relationship, particularly in the sectors of energy, natural resources, and logistic planning.
For Mali, this rapprochement with Moscow is part of a dynamic to diversify its international partnerships. In the background, a clear intention to empower the country’s diplomatic and developmental choices. On the Russian side, the commitment fits into a broader strategy of consolidating its positions on the African continent.
The Malian president’s stay, scheduled until Thursday, June 26, could lead to new bilateral agreements. In any case, it confirms the evolution of a now multidimensional partnership, with the ambition to support Mali’s stability and development efforts.
