Six years after their last appearance, Benin will return to the final tournament of the Africa Cup of Nations. The Cheetahs will also compete at AFCON 2025, which opens in 10 days in Morocco. Hunting their first title in this competition, Benin dreams of winning this edition, or at least doing better than at AFCON 2019 when the Beninese fell short of the semi-finals.

That’s at least what Steve Mounié hopes, who will play his second Africa Cup of Nations final tournament. In remarks relayed by Africafootunited, the Cheetahs’ captain fully believes in the new generation and its ability to reach those goals. “Today, we’re thirsty for the Africa Cup. It’s been six years since we took part. We’re with a new generation that wants to prove it has quality and that wants to do better than what we achieved in 2019,” he said.

Placed in a fairly tough Group C, Benin will have to bring out the heavy artillery against Botswana, DR Congo and Senegal, who are tipped as tournament favorites. A perilous mission that doesn’t worry Steve Mounié, who already sees his side getting through the group stage: “It’s going to be tough because we have a group that isn’t easy, with DR Congo, Senegal and Botswana. But we believe in our chances, we believe in our qualities and we’re convinced we can already get through the group stage.”

So we’ll find out in a few days, with a first test against DR Congo on December 23, 2025, as part of the first matchday of the group stage. Note that AFCON 2025 will be held in Morocco, from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026. As hosts, the Atlas Lions will kick things off against the Comoros Cranes.
