The British drill phenomenon, Oakley Neil Caesar-Su, widely known by the stage name Central Cee, made a striking personal announcement during a recent live stream: he converted to Islam. I have just changed my name and pronounced the shahada, I am Muslim now, the 25-year-old rapper said, as his friends surrounded him with congratulations in the video. This revelation ends speculation about his religious affiliation, which he had never officially declared before.
Born on June 4, 1998 in London to an English mother and a father of Guyanese and Chinese origin, Central Cee grew up with his parents’ separation when he was seven. He was raised by his mother and his two younger brothers in the Shepherd’s Bush neighborhood, in West London.
His musical career, which began with an appearance in the series Fire in the Streets in 2014, truly took off with the remix Ain’t On Nuttin in January 2015. But it was the single Day in the Life, released on June 14, 2020, that propelled him to the top of the British drill scene, making him an undisputed superstar of the genre.
A leading artist of the Band 4 Band group, Central Cee also indicated that he had adopted a new name connected to his conversion, though he has not publicly revealed it yet.
