FC Barcelona officially enters the electoral period. In accordance with its statutes, Joan Laporta has submitted his resignation as president of the Catalan club in order to stand for re-election in the election scheduled for Sunday, March 15. A formal, but highly symbolic step that marks the start of a new political cycle within the blaugrana institution.

The announcement was made on Monday during an ordinary board meeting, at which the call for elections was validated. As provided by the club’s internal regulations, the outgoing president is required to leave his post if he wishes to seek a new mandate. Joan Laporta, who was president from 2003 to 2010 and then re-elected in 2021, is not abandoning ship, but is acting within the rules to try to extend his tenure at the head of Barça.

Under his leadership, several members of the current management have also submitted their resignations in order to participate in the electoral process. Among them are notably the vice-president in charge of institutional affairs, Elena Fort, the vice-president of the social sector, Antonio Escudero, as well as several influential board members. A wave of departures is expected, which will lead to a provisional reshaping of the club’s governance.

Until the proclamation of the results and the official end of the term, set for June 30, a transitional board of directors is tasked with ensuring continuity. It will be chaired by Rafael Yuste, with Josep Cubells appointed vice-president and secretary, and Alfons Castro in the role of treasurer, alongside several continuing directors.

In a still fragile economic context and as the sporting project remains closely watched, this electoral phase is set to be decisive for FC Barcelona’s future. Joan Laporta, a central figure in the club’s recent rebuilding, aims to persuade the club members to grant him a new mandate to continue the reforms undertaken. By the March 15 vote, the campaign is set to be lively, as the sporting, financial and institutional stakes remain substantial for Barça.
