Nigerian senator Ned Nwoko wanted to set the record straight about his marriage to actress Regina Daniels, now separated from him, saying he never sought to marry her. At the center of a heated controversy for several weeks, the 64-year-old politician responded to accusations from his ex-wife, who had recently accused him of domestic violence and said she no longer wanted to continue their union. In turn, Nwoko accused the actress of drug dependence and demanded that she undergo rehab.

This public quarrel has sparked an outcry in Nigeria, with many voices rising against the senator, suspected of having married Regina Daniels while she was still a minor. Some even called for his resignation. In a statement sent to the national news agency (NAN), the Delta North lawmaker rejected these accusations, specifying that Regina was 19 at the time of the marriage and not 17. He also maintained that the union had been initiated by the actress’s mother: “Witnesses can confirm it; it was her mother who personally introduced her to me. I never courted her,” he said.
