Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has been handed a six-match suspension following his red card during his team’s 3-2 loss to FC Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday. Jude Bellingham, who was also sent off, saw his red card overturned.
The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee has delivered its verdict on the post-match outbursts by several Madrid players following their dramatic defeat to Barça in extra time.
Rüdiger received a six-game ban, while Lucas Vázquez was suspended for two matches. Bellingham, who was also shown a red card after the final whistle, had his dismissal rescinded.
Rüdiger, Bellingham, and Vázquez were all sent off during or after extra time, having reacted furiously to referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea’s decisions.
In his match report, De Burgos wrote that Rüdiger was sent off in the 120th minute “for throwing an object from the technical area,” and “had to be restrained by several members of the coaching staff due to aggressive behavior.”
Vázquez, who had already been substituted, was dismissed “for entering the field of play.” Bellingham was penalized for “approaching the referee’s position in an aggressive manner, before being held back by teammates.”
