Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has claimed he began his life in a one-room apartment in a public housing complex locally known as face-me-I-face-you.

The artist made the statement in a new song titled CFMF, from his fifth studio album 5ive, released on Friday. In the lyrics, he says he now lives a lavish life thanks to the divine intervention of Jesus.

“Take a step into my life… It all started in a face-me-I-face-you. And now I’m really living well, all thanks to Jesus. All thanks to Jesus, oh,” he sings.

His claims have sparked a wave of skepticism, especially on social media, as Davido is widely known to be the son of billionaire businessman Deji Adeleke. This isn’t the first time the singer has tried to frame his story as a journey from hardship to grace in his music.

In his 2011 debut single Back When, Davido claimed many women rejected him when he had no money, but began pursuing him after he gained fame and success.

The song received limited commercial success, partly due to doubts surrounding his narrative of coming from a humble background — a claim at odds with his well-documented affluent upbringing.
